He has been elected to many offices in teacher organizations, and served on numerous Boards, including for forty years Chair of the Board of Alpha Plus Corporation (a nonprofit corporation of preschools San Francisco Bay Area), thirty years on the CCCTE’s Curriculum Study Commission, Chair of The Research Foundation of the National Council of Teachers of English, and recently for five years on the Board of BASRC (Bay Area School Reform Collaborative). He began his 17 year English teaching career at Washington Union High School (Fremont, California). In recent years has served as a consultant on assessment and teaching secondary English in Palo Alto, California; Fort Worth, Texas; Los Angeles Unified (the BTSA program); Phoenix, Arizona; and elsewhere. In several books and many articles, his research has focused on practices and policies in the K-12 teaching of English.
