Project Director

Charlotte Higuchi brings more than twenty-five years of extensive teaching experience to her present position as Director of the Institute for Standards, Curricula and Assessments (ISCA), a non-profit organization that disseminates the Lesson Design Study process for supporting teachers to design and perfect standards-based lessons and assessments for all disciplines, K to12. Day Higuchi
Associate Director

Day Higuchi was President of United Teachers Los Angeles (UTLA) from 1995 to 2001. Prior to his presidency, he served as UTLA’s AFT Vice President. Before holding citywide union office, he was a middle school teacher in East Los Angeles for twenty years. Retired from teaching and union leadership, he is now a full-time volunteer staff member of ISCA. He specializes in guiding mathematics and science teachers through lesson design study, which he often describes as "applying the scientific method to your own teaching." Day taught a variety of subjects when he was in the classroom, including: physical science, life science, health, reading, English, drama, telecommunications, film-making, and social studies, and likes to confront the different challenges posed by teaching in different disciplines. Miles Myers
Senior Researcher

Miles A. Myers, Ph.D., is currently the Senior Researcher for the Institute for Standards, Curricula, and Assessment (ISCA), sponsored by the United Teachers of Los Angeles, and a consultant for the Hewlett Project at the Institute for Learning, (IFL) University of Pittsburg. He has served as Executive Director for Edschool.com, Advantage Inc; Executive Director of the California Subject Matter Projects (CSMP, President’s Office, University of California); Executive Director, the National Council of Teachers of English; Co-Director of the Language Arts Project of the New Standards Project; Co-Director and later Administrative Director of the Bay Area Writing Project (BAWP), the California Writing Project, and the National Writing Project at the University of California, Berkeley ; President of the California Federation of Teachers-AFT and the Oakland AFT; Vice-President of the California Association of Teachers of English; President of the Central California Council of Teachers of English; Supervisor and Methods Instructor, Secondary English Credential Program, University of California, Berkeley; Adjunct Professor of English at the University of Illinois, Urbana, Ill.; and an English teacher and later English Department Chair at Oakland High School, Oakland, California. more ...
